"Mid August 2004 our 15 year old daughter ran away with the aide of her "boyfriend's" mom to their home in Issaquah.  Her boyfriend had moved across the state, but still exerted amazing control over her    We soon discovered the state laws in Washington are definitely not in favor of us as parents.  It is not illegal for a minor to run away from home, so the police could not hold her over 6 hours if they were able to pick her up.  We found a school for troubled teens, enrolled our daughter and tried to figure out how to get her there.  The "boyfriend's" mom had moved in the meantime to a location approximately 5 hours from us.  We were able to get what we thought was the new address and phone number.  At this point we appeared to have two options--go over ourselves and try to get her, or have the police try and pick her up.  Either alternative was too risky.  If we didn't get her quietly the first time, then she would have gone somewhere else and we would not have been able to find her or we could have been in legal trouble. Handling a runaway daughter is not something we felt we did not know enough about legally nor did we feel that we could emotionally handle transporting her. The personnel at the school recommended that we contact Confidential Investigations.  
     In less than a week (over Labor Day weekend) they were ready to make a move.  They left Idaho and drove all night to the location.  They spotted her at 9:30 that morning, called the local police and had our daughter secure and in route to the school in approximately an hour and a half.  I had been holding it together, but when I got the call from Confidential that they had her and were heading to the school I lost it. Unless you have been in this situation and of course we never thought this would happen to us, it is hard to imagine the relief I felt.  Everything I had been holding inside came flooding out--the anger at the system, the grief for our family, but mostly the overwhelming relief knowing that she was safe and heading somewhere where she could get help.  Calling them was the right choice. They were awesome."
